Canner Protocol

This chapter shows how to connect from Tableau Server/Desktop to Canner Enterprise through Canner Protocol to retrieve data. This approach treats Canner Enterprise as a database and connects using Tableau's Live Connect/Extract features.

Step 1: Add a connection in Tableau Desktop

Open Tableau Desktop. Under Connect, choose To a Server, click More, and select PostgreSQL.

Step 2: Configure the connection

Configure the connection in the following window.

First, copy the connection information from the Canner Enterprise workspace you want to retrieve data from (see the steps in Canner Protocol Overview), then fill it in on the Tableau Desktop settings screen.

  • Server: The host or IP address of Canner Enterprise
  • Port: Use the port shown under the Share button in Canner Enterprise; the default is 7432
  • Database: Corresponds to Database (SQL Name) in Canner Enterprise; enter the SQL Name of this workspace
  • Authentication: Select Username and Password
  • Username: Corresponds to User in Canner Enterprise; enter canner
  • Password: Enter a Personal Access Token. See Get a Personal Access Token

Click Sign In to connect.

Step 3: Connection complete

Once connected, you will see the connection, the database (the workspace you connected to), and the tables (datasets authorized in the workspace) under the data source, and you can use them for any downstream work in Tableau Desktop.
