Schema Management

Custom schema

Some non-relational databases have no fixed table schema, so Canner Enterprise infers and normalizes one by sampling the data. To adjust the structure Canner Enterprise inferred, go to the "Tables" tab of the data source page, click the Edit button (vertical three-dot icon) for the table, and select Manage mapping columns.

info

Custom schemas are not available for relational databases.

3_data_connection

After clicking Manage mapping columns, you can see the structure the system inferred and edit the schema directly in the Columns section. Click Submit to update the table's schema.

Because the data sources behind Canner Enterprise's "virtual database" are dynamic, the system must track changes in every underlying database and data source precisely, and update them in its metadata database, to manage the virtual database's metadata.

Automatic schema metadata detection

By default, Canner Enterprise checks for metadata changes every 30 minutes. If there are changes, both the Admin and the Data Steward (Workspace Owner) can see a notification in the system, review the changes, and fix them.

Manual schema metadata detection

Click the vertical three-dot icon to the right of Data Sources in the sidebar to open the drop-down menu. When the Admin clicks Scan Data Sources, the schema metadata update starts immediately.

After clicking Scan Data Sources, a Loading indicator shows that the scan is running.

View schema history

Click the vertical three-dot icon to the right of Data Sources in the sidebar to open the drop-down menu, then click View Schema History to open the Schema Change History page, which shows the full history of schema changes (see below). You can see how the schemas of connected databases changed at different points in time, such as additions, deletions, and type changes, giving you a full picture of the databases' history.

The page is laid out as follows:

  1. The left side shows 10 entries by default (the 10 most recent changes). Each entry contains the change records of up to 100 tables. Scroll to the bottom and click "Load More" to see earlier records.
  2. Click "See more detail" to show the detailed schema change record on the right.
