Metadata Management
In Canner Enterprise, users can edit metadata on their data. Every workspace, and every table and column in a data source, has its own metadata for users to edit, and users can search this metadata.
This chapter describes metadata management for data sources.
You can also set search visibility for metadata. With public search, users can find the metadata, but may not be able to view details; only people with data permissions can view the details.
Data source metadata management
When a data source is created, Canner Enterprise extracts and saves the tables and their column information (column name, column type) from the source database. For these tables and columns, the system provides two additional metadata fields (Description and Tag) where the Data Owner can enter custom business names.
This chapter covers the following 3 kinds of metadata defined for a data source. For metadata management of a data source's EQT, see the External Query Table (EQT) chapter.
- The data source itself
- Tables
- The columns of a table
Edit data source metadata
On the Metadata tab of the Data Source page, click the Edit button in the Metadata Information section.

In the dialog, you can set the following metadata for the data source.
- Tags: Custom tags (one or more). To add a tag, click +Add item, or pick from existing tags.
- Description: A custom text description.
- Public Search: Defaults to "Private", in which case the data source does not appear in the side menu Search results. If set to "Public", it appears in the side menu Search results.

After editing, the updated metadata is shown under Metadata Information on the data source's Metadata tab.

Edit table metadata
-
On the Data Source page, switch to the Tables tab.
-
Click the
…icon at the end of a table row and select Edit Metadata.
The metadata editing dialog opens, where you can set the metadata for this table in the data source, including tags, description, and Public Search. Public Search defaults to inheriting the data source's setting ("Inherit"); the Public Search menu offers one other option. If set to "Private", the table does not appear in the side menu Search results.

After editing, the updated metadata is shown in the table list.

Edit column metadata
Open the table's details page, click the … icon at the end of a column row, and select Edit Metadata.

The metadata editing dialog opens, where you can set the column's metadata, including tags, description, and Public Search. Public Search defaults to inheriting the table's setting ("Inherit"); the Public Search menu offers one other option. If set to "Private", the column does not appear in the side menu Search results.
The column Name and Type are filled in automatically from the connected data source and cannot be edited.

After editing, the updated metadata is shown on the page.
